What is the PolioPlus Society?

The PolioPlus Society (PPS) was established to promote sustainable giving among Rotarians. Members commit to donating a minimum of $100 annually to the PolioPlus Fund until polio is eradicated worldwide. Society members receive a special PPS pin, an End Polio Now bracelet, and a certificate. You can find the flyer and enrollment form on the left side of this page.

Why is Polio Eradication Important?

  • Rotary’s Top Priority: Eradicating polio remains one of Rotary’s top most global priorities.
  • Impact on Children: Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal disease, primarily affecting children under 5 years old.
  • No Cure, Only Prevention: There is no cure for polio; immunization is the only prevention.

Rotary’s Progress and Commitment

  • Current Status: We are "This Close" to eradicating polio, but ongoing efforts are crucial.
  • Financial Contributions: Since 1985, Rotary International (RI) has raised approximately 10% of the total eradication costs.
  • Gates Foundation Partnership: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has challenged RI to raise $50 million annually for polio, matching with $100 million, totaling $150 million per year.
  • Future Goals: After the last case of polio, 450 million children under the age of 5 must be immunized annually for three years to ensure the virus is completely eradicated.

District 5450’s Role

  • Club Contributions: Clubs are encouraged to contribute $50 per member towards polio eradication through member donations and community awareness events. RI recommends $1,500 per club, and the District 5450 PolioPlus Committee acknowledges the donations from clubs may vary by the club size.
  • Support and Resources: The District PolioPlus Committee offers information, speakers, flyers, and support for club fundraisers and community awareness programs.
