The Commerce City Rotary invites District 5450 Clubs to join them in two NO COST Literacy International Service Projects.

It’s easy to participate in either --
English as a Second Language in North Central Mongolia or
the Library Project for the First Nations Indian Bands in the West Central Region of British Columbia.

Begin collecting items for either/or both projects and notify the Commerce City Club for delivery.

English as a Second Language in North Central Mongolia needs your club to assist with obtaining
  • pre-school picture books
  • 1st through 3rd grade library books
  • flash cards
  • laptop computers for the teachers
  • digital projectors
  • and kids’ VCR tapes.
In addition, teaching aids to assist the English teachers are also needed.

The 2nd project is a Library Project for the First Nations in British Columbia to obtain
  • library books for pre-school
  • library books for 1st through high school grades
  • adult reading books to supply empty library facilities on many Indian band reservations in North-Western Canada.

History of the two Literacy Projects:

English as a Second Language in North Central Mongolia was initiated in 2010 after a visit by Commerce City Rotarians to the area and meeting English teachers at local schools who stressed the limited teaching aids in the poor village schools. CCRC obtained a partnership with Sweetwater Travel in Livingston, Montana who provides transportation from Seattle, WA to the local schools in Northern Central Mongolia.  T

Two shipments have been completed and the third is being delivered to Seattle in March. This past September, three schools in the project were visited and the need for future deliveries was reaffirmed.

Books and Library facilities for the First Nation, Indian Bands in the West Central Region of British Columbia was identified by CCRC Rotarians in 2011 while visiting the Williams Lake, BC Daybreak Rotary Club of District 5040.

The Commerce City Rotary Club joined forces with the Williams Lake Daybreak Club by providing donated books and computers to the project for the past two years and will continue for many more years due to the need.

Both International Literacy service projects have been joined by other D5450 clubs and are ongoing projects.  For more information on the ongoing need and how your club can get involved please contact: George Maybee @ 303-655-9831 or gkmaybee@aol.com.
